Music for dance & creative movement
Welcome to the SAM 'music for dance' pages
Here we have examples and ideas of music and sounds for dance - especially children's dance - as well as creative movement classes and performance
I've lived and worked with dance and music for some time .. Ballet schools piano playing, touring groups, music composition for dance performances, plus years of being involved with Australian Aboriginal traditional ceremony - where dance, music, environment, season, people and location are all integral to an occasion .. a wonderful learning experience !
I think the best way of integrating music into dance performance is to use it live, partly 'set' and partly extemporized Metre, mood, dynamics and response all available instantly - the choreographer and musician must be able to work well together !
For the majority of dance and movement classes, rehearsals, development (and even performance), using live music is impossible - for all kinds of reasons; so maybe this may help ..
We're assembling a catalogue of music - and sounds - here for dance There are recorded music sketches (old and new) plus nature sounds (birds, frogs, water, wind, fire, sea) We use nature sounds quite a bit here, they tend to engage (especially) children

'The music is suitable for young children (because) it provides stimulation for broadly based explorations of the body, body activities, space, force and time.
It also connects children to their experience of both the natural and (man) made world.
The exciting range of dynamic variations inherent in the music allow for open ended explorations - with enough structure to be able to manage the flow of the lesson.
The inclusion of bird and frog sounds captures that children's attention and enable them to focus on listening and identifying.
'Eucalypt' (1983) cassette - the story: A musical trip through the Australian bush, originally composed for dance.
An ambassador gnome is sent to Australia from the world of gnomes to seek and select which treasures from this country are worthy of inclusion in the gnome encyclopaedia.
A magpie guide takes the ambassador around the country - discovering wattle trees, rosella birds, kangaroos, water, fire, wombats, opals, soldier ants - and the eucalypt.
Note: a gnome is a diminutive spirit of subterranean race guarding treasures of the earth.
